faking cron jobs for sparklines

Sjeiti @ 31/01/2007 19:38 in php, wordpress

I did search for a fake cron job plugin of course (I wouldn’t want to reinvent the wheel). But the only one I could find does not make a difference between bots and humans. If that doesn’t matter for you the plugin is worth a look (it also comes with a couple of plugins that make use of it). But for me this simply doesn’t cut it. So I reinvented the wheel, only mine has less spokes but shinier hubcap.

The reason I needed the cron job is the sparkline to the right here: ‘unique vs bots’. It shows you how many of you visitors are not human (which is quite a lot… scary huh). The image is updated every hour. In due time I will also release this sparkline widget but it still needs a lot of work.

Librarything widget

Finished the librarything widget. It was a bit of a hassle to get the ‘Sidebar Widgets‘ to work since I’m not using the standard theme. But if you have WordPress 2+ and the classic or kubrick them you should have no trouble at all to get this to work. Well even if you don’t have a standard theme it’s still not that difficult to install, I’m just stupid sometimes :-p.

plugins

stats screenshotI’ve sort of completed my first WordPress plugin: a stats page. This is basicly what I had in my former cms. Even though I use Google Analythics for stats I also want the data to reside on my own server to do stuff with it like sparklines.

Writing these plugins is quite easy (no wonder wp is so popular). So next in line are: a good upload tool, stats sparklines extension and a librarything plugin.

WordPress

For years I’ve been using my own CMS which actually started as a sort of personal project to learn more php. And now that I know how to write php I’m too lazy to extend or rewrite my own CMS so I’ve poored all my data into WordPress, which seems to be the most popular php blog type of thing around. There’s still a lot of stuff to implement correctly (the entire code portfolio, long lines for sifr, stats, upload) and there’s a lot of things I want different from the default settings. So I imagine it’ll keep me busy some time (especially writing a good upload plugin).

Youtube Processing group

I just read at Toxi’s Processing RSS feed that Eskimoblood started a Youtube Processing group. Good chance for me to upload my first Youtube movies. Nothing special, just some newly rendered attractor animations. Plus this might be a good kick in the ass for me to stop ‘wasting my time’ making filters and get back on the Processing horse.
